Middle School Basketball Rules 2008/2009



The AIPSL will follow regulations as detailed in the NYSPHAA Modified Game Rules and Conditions. Please take note of the following:

a. An official team roster will be turned in to the league commissioner before the first scheduled league game. Players may be added at a later date upon consultation with the commissioner. A player that is not on the official team roster cannot play in a game.
b. No player that has completed his 8
th year in school, or who will reach the age of 15 before the beginning of league play may participate in league play.

c. A team arriving at a game venue more than one half-hour after the scheduled start time will be required to either forfeit or reschedule the game at the discretion of the opposing team.

d. A pebbled leather basketball of good quality will be provided by the home team and used as the official ball for all games. Boys will play with a full size regulation ball, girls with a 28.5 Inch women’s ball. Home team should also provide warm up balls.

e. Home team will provide a score clock, competent scorer, timekeeper and official bookkeeper.

f. Uniforms must include matching shorts and jerseys for all players, and numbers be limited to 0-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45 and 50-55. No other numbers are allowed. Shirts worn under the jersey must be of like color to the jersey. No jewelry or wristbands of any sort may be worn during play.

g. Home team is responsible for arranging alternate color if team jerseys are the same color. In general, the home team will wear white when possible. Athletic Directors should communicate any deviation from this general rule to the visiting Athletic Director and/or coach before the day of the game.

h. A team will be held responsible for the behavior of their players and spectators. Good sportsmanship will be maintained as detailed in the AIPSL General Guidelines.

i. If a player is ejected from a game for any reason he will be subject to a one league game suspension. Any subsequent ejection of the same player will result in a minimum of a three game suspension and the possibility of ejection from all league play.

j. Games will consist of four 7 Minute, stop clock quarters with a 7 minute half-time break.

k. Timeouts: Girls teams are allowed 4 full timeouts and 2 thirty-second timeouts per game. Boy’s teams are allowed 3 full timeouts and 2 thirty-second timeouts per game.

l. In case of a tie, a three-minute overtime will be played, beginning with a jump ball. Any additional overtime play will be limited to two minutes.

m. Three point shots are allowed in playing courts that have a marked, regulation 3-point line.

n. When one team has a lead of 20 points or more, their coach, and if necessary the referee, will require that team to play half-court defense and desist from pressing in the front court.

o. The 10 seconds to cross the half-court line rule is in effect for both boys and girls games.

p. Five-second Rule – In girls basketball, a closely
guarded player holding the ball has five seconds to either pass or dribble the ball. In boys basketball, a closely guarded player holding the ball has five seconds to either pass or dribble the ball, but may only dribble for five additional seconds, after which he must either pass or advance the ball toward the hoop. When called, possession of the ball goes to the opposing team.

q. Foul Shot Lane Rules: The rebounding lane positions closest to and on either side of the basket will not be occupied.


r. Players on girls teams may move from their outside the lane rebounding positions on a foul shot after the release of the shot. Players on boy’s teams may do so only after the ball makes contact with the rim.
